I Need Some Help, Please!

Do ya know where I can find some good programs for editing video with sound? Or do I need some better of equipment?

My goal is to edit some home videos and photos with movie videos and DVDs, and then add some music and commentary (don’t ask, it’s an art "thingie".) I have ShowBiz, Sonic, Nero, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, blah blah blah, (half a dozen others that haven’t helped at all) and a nifty little gadget that lets me add voice to a VCR tape, but I can’t figure out how to get it all on my computer, much less how to fit on a DVD...

I’ve been to Best Buy and Staples (as well as the guy who built my computer supposedly to do this type of work,) but they haven’t been much help. Do you guys know anything about this, or can you point me in the direction of someone that does?

PS: I am totally screwing up my sleeping habit here... So the next time I complain about having insomnia, feel free to give me hell about it (and point out this post!) :o)

First, thanks for linking to Gone Ronin. I don't recall having visited your fine blog, so I'm at a loss for how you found mine, but whatever. Nice to be noticed. :)

Second, do you already have a TV or video-capture card? There are a bunch out there, and most of them have an RCA connection where you can hook up a VCR and transfer video to your PC that way. I've been thinking about getting one myself.

This software seemed neat, but pricey ($99). I briefly looked for a comparison article, but the only one I found was from 2002.

And I'm not going to tell you how I found your blog, Ghost Dog... 'Cause that's the kind of bugger I am. Teehee. I'm just going to leave you wondering :o)

I do like your blog, though. You have some good stuff on there (other than the sports stuff, that is... Ick.) I'm just amazed that you found my hookup before I've even had a chance to comment on anything...

Anyway, I do have a video capture card, but the problem seems to be when I bring it in. The file is so large that it crashes my computer, and that's just after about 15 minutes of video. Now, I know other people with less memory (??? is that the word?) on their computers than I have have edited their videos, so I can't help but to think that it's a "user error", lol.

I use ShowBiz; it works well for what I need. I record directly from cable TV or my home video, then edit from there. I haven't done audio commentary; maybe that's the difference?

Doesn't look like I can help you here.

It would be good to get a rundown on what you are running on your system. But, I'm thinking that you are either having a hardware conflict, driver conflict or the ever dreaded codec issues. If you have all of those programs on your computer, I'd limit them by function. Multiple video burning programs can become a problem because each installs their own set of codecs. (I've had codec issues with MySonic before.) Also, at what point in the process does your system crash? Importing video? If so, I'd start looking for updates to that video card and even search online to find out if other people have had that same problem with it.
