Sappy Can Be Good
I was teasing Jenn about watching a sappy movie the other day, but you know, sappy can be a good thing. I’m watching Searching For Bobby Fisher and it’s reaffirming something that I’ve known for a long time, but I may have forgotten. You can beat a person down in an argument, sports, any other aspect of life, with facts, skills, knowledge, conning... But you can’t win the war, if you’re only focused on the battle at hand.
What good is it to win, when the win holds no other value than to be the victor? Patience and guidance, open mindedness and the willingness to listen will not only win out, but it will give others their dignity and a sense of self respect that will encourage them to find their own way... Which benefits everyone.
I guess that’s why I’ve never understood sports or any other type of competition that doesn’t produce results. Life is too short to concentrate on being the best and not being a ‘teacher’, even if you're not sure of what it is you're trying to teach.

I do like the way you are thinking here RT but I have to confess that I the struggle, growth and compromise are fascinating. Even though I dislike it when it comes to politics because it is nothing but frustrating. B)
There was supposed to be a "think" inbetween "that I" and "struggle" but damn blogger for not having a spell check for comments or a place to edit them.
Well said. As a teacher, I have to often remind the kids that putting down someone else is a hollow "victory"; there's nothing to be gained from trashing someone else.
On the other hand, I love sports and winnning as part of a team focused on something.
Is that contradictory?
I don't think there's anything wrong with liking sports. It can be some great entertainment for an adult, and it can help a youngster learn about team play and all that stuff (as long as that's what it is doing, and not teaching one or two kids on the team that they're more important than the others...)
It's when you let sports (or anything else for that matter) consume your life that it becomes a problem.
When I think about it, sports aren't much different than religion. The ideas behind them are great, but there's always the risk of taking it too far. When the ending produces only fighting and anguish, it's defeating the original purpose.
I guess that's what bothers me the most, someone put a lot of hard work and thought into creating something good, then others come along and bastardize it into something to fight about.
Does that make sense?

La Bamba is sappy. Dirty Dancing is love stuff. No sappy. The soundtrack owns!
